Self-catering holiday accommodation in Knaresborough

Knaresborough is a pleasant historic market town in North Yorkshire. Just under 4 miles from the centre of Harrogate, this town dates back to Norman times and has plenty of places of historic interest like Knaresborough Castle. The castle is perched at the top of a sheer cliff the overlooks the River Nidd – much of the edifice is in ruins, but you can still get a good picture of how life would have been when it was a royal residence and battlement. There’s an on-site museum for visitors to investigate.

The town centre is home to an attractive knot of streets full of interesting shops, boutiques, eateries and pubs. Wind your way down to the River Nidd and take lunch at Bebra Gardens where you can catch sight of the beautiful railway viaduct that spans the gorge. You could spend time at a place that claims to be England’s oldest attraction: Mother Shipton’s Cave. This mystical attraction has a well that reputedly turns objects that are lowered into it to stone. People have been queuing to see the miracle for themselves since 1630. Walkers can ramble through the network of Woodland Trust-managed pathways in the Nidd Gorge. Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to ‘bag’ a sighting of roe deer, dippers, woodpeckers, kingfishers or even an otter. There’s much to enjoy and discover on a trip to Knaresborough, including the nearby city of York.
